Sikhs purify pond
About 400,000 Sikhs carrying shovels and buckets thronged the Golden Temple in Amritsar to purify the holy pond surrounding the 17th century shrine, United News of India said. The voluntary clean-up work began after the Government relinquished control of the temple, more than four months after the army assault against armed Sikh extremals holed up in the complex.—New Delhi.
