Anne visits India

NZPA-Reuter London Princess Anne left for India and Bangladesh yesterday on another of her visits to the poor and underprivileged that have helped her shed an image as the least popular member of the British Royal family. The British press, which only three years ago portrayed her as rude and arrogant, now pay tribute to the “workaholic princess,”

who carries out her duties with energy and compassion. The princess, aged 34, will spend three weeks in Bangladesh and India seeing the work of the Save the Children Fund charity, of which she is president. As in February, when she visited a leper colony during a tour of West Africa, her schedule is tough. She will travel thousands of

kilometres by air and land and will have only one day’s rest. In India, she will visit a mission run by Mother Teresa, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in the Calcutta slums. In Bangladesh, she will visit a nutrition centre for malnourished children, meet village health workers and tour a rehabilitation unit for the paralysed.
