Premier disowns drugs
The New Brunswick Premier, Mr Richard Hatfield, denied yesterday owning marijuana that the police said they had found in his luggage while he escorted the Queen during her tour of the Canadian province last month. The marijuana had been found in an outside pocket of his suitcase on September 25. “Obviously I do not know how it got there,” he told a
news conference. Mr Hatfield, aged 53, and Premier for the last 14 years, read a brief statement, which said, “Two days following the departure of the Queen from Moncton, two officials from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police called on me and informed me that a package was found in a pocket on the outside of my suitcase and that following
an analysis it was determined that the package contained marijuana. “I told them it did not belong to me. Obviously I do not know how it got there. I have retained legal counsel ... and I will not have anything further to say on the matter.” The Mounties have declined to comment on the case and no charges have been filed.
