Ban placed on French ships
PA Wellington New Zealand watersiders have put a ban on French ships carrying nuclear test materials to Mururoa Atoll, , The secretary of the Watersiders Workers’ Federation, Mr Sam Jennings, said yesterday that the banning decision; had been taken at last week’s biennial conference at New Plymouth.. “French-flagged vessels carrying ‘yellow cake’ (uranium) and nuclear potential building materials for use on the atoll will not be worked by watersiders at any p * in New Zealand,” Mr Je... ' • said. His memoers were totally
opposed to the dumping of nuclear waste into the oceans of the world .by any nation. “The continuing atomic testing by the French Government and the disposal of nuclear waste in the Pacific Ocean, in spite of the protests of the peoples of the Pacific Basin, is an arro-. gant and irresponsible action by •' France,” Mr Jennings said. \ The federation would once again ask the Government to protest formally to its French counterpart at the continued testing and dumping programme in the Pacific and lodge a formal protest with the French embassy in Wellington.
