Tapu lifted at union centre
PA Hamilton A new trade union centre in Hamilton was opened on Monday with a dawn tapulifting ceremony by Maori elders. The ceremony involved moving through both storeys of the $400,000 building, ending with a Christian prayer and hymn in Maori and a traditional powhiri (welcome ceremony). Pacific Islanders were also represented with a short speech by a Samoan trade unionist, Mr Poumau PapaE’i. The building committee's convener, Mr Peter Murphy, said that as far as he knew it was the first time a trade union building had been given a Maori opening. "Our intention is to reflect the bicultural aspect of the' trade union movement,” Mr Murphy said.
