Week-end road toll six
PA Wellington A Paraparaumu truckdriver was killed early yesterday morning when his vehicle overturned on State highway 1 north of Marton. His death brought the Labour Day holiday weekend road toll to six, as the period ended at 8 a.m. yesterday. The man was
Frederick Joseph Bridgeman, aged 42, of Paraparaumu. Mr Bridgeman died after his new truck and trailer unit overturned about 12km north of Marton, just after 2 a.m. The provisional holiday road toll of six is the lowest for any Labour Day weekend since 1977, when two persons died.
Last year, 13 died in motor accidents, while a record 16 were killed in 1978. The assistant chief traffic superintendent at the Ministry of Transport, Mr Henry Gore, said that many factors could be taken into account for the lower toll, including the large numbers of traffic officers who patrolled the highways.
