Shannon dog wins Derby
PA New Plymouth Zak Havoc, from Shannon, won the 1984 New Zealand Derby at the Taranaki Greyhound Racing Club’s meeting at Hawera on Monday., The 540 m event was a thriller, with Zak Havoc having to withstand a spirited late challenge from Wairere Wonder. Zak Havoc, which is by Call Me Hobbs from Sally Havoc, is trained at Shannon by Mr George Little. Call Me Hobbs, has been one of New Zealand’s top sires of recent years, and sired the 1982 New Zealand Derby winner, Karamu King. Zak Havoc was quickly away from box No. 3 in Monday’s event and went straight to the lead. Soon after turning for home Wairere Wonder began to make a move and was in hot pursuit 100 m out. However, Zak Havoc had just enough in reserve to have a head to spare at the post.
