Bernard has record lift

PA Nelson Auckland’s Mike Bernard was the only competitor in record- breaking form at the New Zealand weightlifting championships in Nelson on Saturday. Bernard broke Allister Nalder’s clean and jerk record in the 82.5 kg class with the final lift of the meeting. Bernard had equalled Nalder’s previous best mark of 180 kg and successfully lifted the new record of 182.5 kg in his final clean and jerk attempt. Nalder was unable to defend any of his records, however, as he was forced to compete one weight division higher in the 90kg class. It was the only record broken at the meeting although attempts were made to equal or break four others, including an attempt by Nalder to break his fellow

Nelson and New Zealand team-mate John Callaghan’s 145.5 kg snatch record in the 90kg class. Auckland predictably won the teams’ event.
