Games board
A board of control which will have over-all control of the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland has been named. It will be headed by Mr Joe McManemin, a retired pharmacist, aged 61. His five fellow board of control members are Messrs Malcolm Beattie, Kevin Tracey, David Mace, Brian Bremner and Judge Trevor Maxwell. As chairamn Mr McManemin will not have any specific duties, but the other five board members have all been allocated responsibilities. Mr Beattie, a member of the delegation which secured the Games for Auckland in Los Angeles in July, will be the marketing director. He will be responsible for sales promotion, including sponsorshiop, the news media, programmes, and Government liaison with E articular reference to mareting and catering. Mr Tracey is the general manager of development for Dominion Breweries. He
will be the director of communications and also in charge of ticketing, ceremonial, accommodation and accreditation. Judge Maxwell, a former national class sprinter, will be the sports director. His responsibility will be sports administration — sports venues, medical, local body liaison and the technical aspects of the Games’ sports. Mr Mace, a chartered accountant, will be in charge of finance. He will be responsible for budgeting, cost control, finance authorisation, liaison with the Government on financial matters, transport, security, and the salaried and volunteer manpower needed for the Games. Mr Bremner is the only non-Aucklander on the board. A Wellington resident, he will be the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association’s liaison director. An organising committee, which will have 15 divisional controllers, will be named later.
