BOOKSHELF
Par Excellence. A fitness guide for golfers. By Doug Machray. (Dunmore Press Ltd.; 89pp; $9.90) Doug Machray, a member of the New Zealand Professional Golf Association, has hit on a very good idea with this little book of exercises for golfers. How many hundreds of thousands of times have amateur golfers rushed to their courses, hurried their clubs from car to tee, and expected to play at their best, straight away? PtSfessionals usually spend an hour or two at
practice before starting a round. Machray goes much further than the production of some limbering-up exercises before a round. He has produced a series of drills — which do not seem to be especially demanding — each of which is designed to improve the timing or strength of a particular part of the swing. The exercises are set out in three groups. There is a fourth section, detailing drills for the advanced golfer. Photographs and line drawings enhance -Mie value of this very useful and timely little book.
