NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier on moderate turnover yesterday as investors responded to bearish news from abroad. The all ordinaries index fell 3.6 to 741.8, the all industrials marker slipped 3.4 to 1088.9 and the ail resources index 3.7 to 474.1. Brokers said investors were discouraged by a nine-point fall on Wail Street and thin trading on the New York bullion market They said the market remained cautious about resource issues in spite of an assurance from Saudi Arabia that OPEC, prices will not be cut BHP dropped 5c to 1005. Santos and Bridge eased 4c to 6.30 and 2.36, Hartogen 3c to 2.15 and Woodside 2c to 1.16. Among the miners, Central Norseman retreated 20c to 4.90, and Poseidon 15c to 3.00. On the industrial boards, Castlemaine Tooheys dropped 16c to 5.10 while AUC was steady at 4.25 with Boral down 9c at 3.25. Nicholas Kiwi advanced 2c to 4.52 while Rothmans rose 30c to 10.55 ahead of restructuring plans with Jennings 10c higher at 1.80.
