Grant for old homestead

PA Masterton A 108-year-old Pirinoa homestead, built to be sheltered from sea views because of a feared Russian invasion, has received a $lOOO Historic Places Trust grant. The Whangaimoana homestead, in southern Wairarapa near Lake Ferry, was built in 1876 by John Purvis Russell, remembered for his introduction of gorse

to Wairapapa. The historic building has had a series of owners, the most recent being Alastair and Jacqui Sutherland, who have since been restoring the homestead to its original condition. Carpenters, plasterers and builders from Britain built the homestead, surrounded by a formal fouracre garden, now restored by the Sutherlands.

The director of the Historic Places Trust, Mr John Daniels, said the grant money would help pay for rotted timbers, cornices, and flashings. “The grant comes through the trust’s special programme for assisting owners of important historic places,” said Mr Daniels. The Sutherlands make their home available to paying guests.
