Deep water used

The recent departures from Lyttelton of two vessels with draughts of 11.6 metres indicates shipping lines were taking advantage of the port’s deep water facilities, according to the Harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour. The vessels, the bulk carrier Loftnes and the container ship Tolaga Bay, sailed from Cashin Quay on the rising tide with the deepest draughts of any vessels to have navigated within Lyttelton Harbour. A third vessel, the bulk carrier Hunan, was another recent caller to take, advantage of the deep water, sailing with a draught of 11.3 metres, Captain Barbour said. The vessels called at the Cashin Quay berths between September 7 to October 14 and were proof that larger vesselswere calling more frequently to take advantage of the deeper draught, he said. The three Cashin Quay berths have a maximum draught of 11.6 metres and all inner harbour berths a maximum draught of 11.28 metres. Cashin Quay is dredged to a minimum low-water depth of 12.4 metres which allows for more than 10 per cent leeway beneath a ship’s keel. The shallowest draught in the port and harbour channel is a section of the channel opposite Camp Bay, near the harbour entrance, which has a low water depth of 11.9 metres. The Harbour Board intends to deepen the Cashin Quay draught to 12 metres to enable the berth to handle the larger bulk carriers and container vessels that are expected to call. ARRIVALS Nil.
