Benny award to compere
PA Auckland A veteran compere and commentator, John Maybury, has received the Benny award of the Variety Artists Club of New Zealand. The annual award, named after the club patron, the late master illusionist, Edgar Benyon, has previously gone to such entertainers as Howard Morrison, Ray Columbus and John Rowles. Mr Maybury, aged 55, who began in the early 1950 s as a radio quiz compere, now plays at trade fairs and various shows. He says he regrets he was not a sports commentator.
