Otago irrigation costs may rise
PA Dunedin More than 900 farmers on 15 Central Otago irrigation schemes face the possibility of big water charge increases if National Water and Soil Conservation Organisation (NWASCO) recommendations are implemented. The organisation has recommended that tiie Government increase charges on the Arrow, Ardgour, Tai - - ras, Last Chance, Hawkdun, Idaburn, Manuherikia, Omakau, Galloway, Ida Valley, Pisa, Ripponvale and Teviot
schemes. The recommendations, if implemented, affect 950 farms covering 26,000 hectares. “It will be the feather (sic) that breaks the camel’s ' back,” Otago Federated Farmers’ Alexandra representative, Mr RJL Mac Fie, -. ; told members of the provincial executive. Mr Mac Fie sail-"It is our understanding that the Minister has accepted these recommendations without any phasing in of charges,” said Mr Mac Fie.
