River groynes

The Groynes picnic area takes its name from the concrete and stone structures which are part of the original Waimakariri River stopbank system. A groyne is a breakwater which is built to check erosion and sand-drifting.

Examples of the groynes the picnic spot is named after can be seen on the riverbank near the footbridge, and at a viewpoint 100 metres beyond the weir on the Waimairi Walkway. The Groynes is a popular recreation area, providing the opportunity for many different activities. Some of these are swimming, boating, canoeing, picnicking and walking.
