Swart again
PA Hamilton The Hamilton cyclist, Jack Swart, won his third tour this winter when he took the Chartwell tour of the Waikato yesterday. With the Tasmanian and Southland tours under his belt, Swart raced to the lead in Sunday’s time trial and concentrated on covering his only close rival, the Aucklander, Graeme Miller.. Stephen Cox won the first two of yesterday’s stages and was second behind Paul Leitch (Auckland) in the other, but a puncture in the second day cost him his chance to win the tour for the second year. While Cox dominated the
final day, winning the two hill climbs to clinch the King of the Mountains title, Swart never looked like losing his 13s lead over Miller. He was fourth in the fifth stage, one place behind Miller, then chased Cox home in the short ride from Cambridge to Hamilton. Swart led Miller by 20s starting the final stage, but with 30s in time bonuses hanging on the circuit race he had to ensure Miller did not win all the sprints. The big Waikato rider headed in the first sprint and was assured of over-all victory when Cox and Leitch raced clear to take the other sprint and the stage. '
