N.I. mooring costs rising

Canterbury yacht owners have a long way to match the price for mooring berths paid in Auckland. Selling marina berths for between $15,200 and $25,500 has proved no problem for the developers of a $6 million marina at Hobsonville, North Auckland. The first release of 250 berths at the Westpark Marina was snapped up when selling began a year ago and now there are only 120 berths unsold out of 600. Those available are for craft under 12m. Berths for larger vessels were quickly sold and there is already a waiting list for these, although the marina is not scheduled for completion until May. Some berths have been bought by overseas and nonAuckland residents. Others belong to buyers of house sections in the Westpark Marine Estate which overlooks the marina. There is an insatiable demand for marina berths within Waitemata Harbour, according to the marina’s development manager, Mr Tony Mair, of Wilkins and Davis Construction. The Auckland Harbour Board has a waiting list of 2100 for berths at the Westhaven Marina. The 500 privately-owned berths at Half Moon Hay, Auckland, are fetching, prices of up to $70,000. Competition and prices for berths in Lyttelton Harbour is not so fierce. Prices for berths at, the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s Naval Point marina vary, depending on size, from $7OOO to $ll,OOO. The berths were offered for sale from $6OOO to $9500 when the marina was opened in 1981. The design of the Naval Point marina allows for additional berths to be added to cope with demand. Two berths are being built to accommodate yachts which are more than 16m long. The Harbour Board’s chief

engineer, Mr J. B. Bushell, said there was a small number of people waiting for intermediate. sized berths to accommodate yachts from 8m to 13m. The stub breakwater has now reached 30m into the harbour offering the marina protection from easterly winds. Work on the breakwater which will be 100 m long, was started last year.
