N.Z. shearers try for peace
NZPA-APP Melbourne New Zealand shearers hoped to work in gangs with Australian shearers to overcome resistance to using wide combs, said a shearers’ spokesman yesterday. Mr Bill Tahau, head of a delegation of Maori /shearers, said: “We hope to integrate New Zealand and
Australian shearers into our gangs in future. “we will then be able to assist these guys use the wide combs, which seem to be the bugbear.” A series of meetings between, Maori shearers, the Australian Workers’ Union, the police, and Government officials had worked to r& solve discord surrounding the recent shooting incident at Coleraine, he said. He said that allegations against Maori shearers were false. New Zealand shearers were not working at week-ends, accepting substandard accommodation, or using non-union labour. But in Brisbane, the A.W.U.’s Queensland secretary, Mr Errol Hodder, said that New Zealand shearers should face tighter immigration and taxation controls. He said that friendship between the two countries was being stretched to breaking point by New Zealand shearers taking Australian jobs and undercutting award rates.'
