A retail focal point for eastern suburbs
By Mr K. G. Daldorf, General Manager of the G.UJS. Group. The start of the construction of the Linwood City Shopping Centre is a culmination of 12 years of planning since G.U.S. Properties, Ltd, first purchased land for this purpose in 1972. The centre will provide the most modern shopping facilities in Christchurch, including a large Super Value supermarket and approximately 60 other shops, designed to give customers the opportunity of one-stop shopping in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. A large carpark will provide easy access to the centre, and other community services will be located either adjacent to or within the complex. G.U.S. Properties, Ltd, has been a pioneer in the
establishment of large scale suburban shopping centres, including those at Merivale, Barrington Park and Hornby, all of which receive a great measure of public support The Linwood Centre is expected to become a retail focal point for residents from as far away as Mount Pleasant, South Shore and Heathcote, as well as serve the needs of the immediately surrounding suburbs. Many employment opportunities will be made available as a result of the construction of this building. During the construction period, about 50 people will be employed at any one time, and on completion, the centre will provide work for upwards of 250 people. It is particularly gratifying that such a major project, involving a cost of
SIOM, has been financed completely from local sources, and this indicates the confidence of the local business community in the future of Christchurch. I am delighted that G.U.S. Properties, Ltd, will be associated with N.Z. Meat Nominees, Ltd, and Industrial Holdings, Ltd, in the development of this prestigious project.
