Work on the $1.4 million upgrading of the Cashin Quay No. 2 berth was started earlier this month. The berth’s timber structure is being replaced with a concrete support to enable it to handle heavy-duty cargo loads such as those handled at the adjacent container terminal berth. Modem cargo and handling equipment demands a heavy duty berth to cope with axle loads of between 25 and 30 tons which the No. 2 berth’s present timber construction is unable to carry. The loading compares with about a 5-ton axle limit restriction on the country’s main reading network. Cashin Quay No. 3 is the port’s only heavy duty berth and the Lyttelton Harbour Board said it was necessary to provide another berth which was able to provide facilities for lift-on, lift-off trades which could be serviced by heavy fork-lift plant. The berth’s deck and decking beams are being stripped and will be replaced with 650 pre-cast concrete units. More than 1000 cubic metres of concrete will then be poured to form the wharfs working surface. A three-metre section of the outer berth, which is not required to handle the heavier loads, will be left in place. Work will be staged to allow the berth to be kept in service during the 15-month construction period. The Harbour Board’s chief engineer, Mr John Bushell, said the berth was originally
constructed in timber because it was a standard building material of the day and accommodated the movement of Cashin Quay during its period of consolidation after reclamation.
