Fine trampolining

Competitors at the New Zealand trampoline championships at Cowles Stadium this week-end are showing the benefit of having competed overseas in the last couple of years. The winning marks in the top grades in several cases were exceptional, indicative of the increasing standard of the sport.

The winners of the elite trampoline grades, Paula Ashbridge (Auckland) and Nigel Donnelly (Canterbury), both scored 56 points. Any score above 45 is very good and 56 is an outstanding score. Darlene Harvey (Auckland) and Suzi Nevell (Canterbury) who filled the minor placings, also had well drilled routines.

Donnelly was comfortably clear of the only other entrant in the elite men’s section, Nigel Humphreys (Auckland), but the runnerup also gave a competent performance, The lower grades in the trampoline produced some very close-— competition. Brian Williams from Queensland won the grade 2 men’s events, but he sneaked in by only 0.2 of a point from Eamon Daly of Christchurch. The grade 3 men’s title

was just as close with Craig Nalder (Canterbury) heading Clary Eddington of Whangarei by 0.2 of a point. In the women’s grade 2 trampoline there was a tie for first place between Donna Ingley (Auckland) and Michelle Bailey (Canterbury). The closest competition of the first two days was in the women’s grade 1 mini trampoline. Only 0.3 of a point separated the first three placegetters, with Ingley beating Bailey by the narrowest margin — 0.1. Julie-Anne Joyce (Auckland) was just 0.2 behind Bailey. The championships finish today.
