Rowing St Andrew's takes eights honours
A young but determined St Andrew’s College under 17 crew took both line and handicap honours in the annual skm New Brighton to Kerrs Reach eights rowing race on Saturday. Thirteen crews contested the event, raced in blustery conditions which had some effect on their times.
The crews, which left the Brighton Bridge at intervals ranging from 30s to lipin 30s, raced not only each
other but also the clock on a sealed handicap basis. Coaches obtained an early indication of crew fitness and combination. Second to St Andrew’s on handicap was the Christchurch Boys’ High School under 17 crew and another school eight, the Christ’s
College under 17 crew was third. The fastest time was recorded by Avon No. 2 which completed the distance in 17min 13s. Avon’s crews were weakened with the absence of nine of its top members who were taking part in the national coach-
ing school in Wanganui This year the only incident took place at the first bridge, at Bower Avenue. The St Bede’s College under 16 eight and the Cure intermediate-novice women’s crew both made for the middle span, the only way through Both
crews had to stop, but St Bede’s eventually went through first with no damage to either boat
