Government costs

Sir,—The Government called the Economic Summit Conference and asked all sectors to help right the economy. One month later it has done nothing to cut its own huge administration costs. The State Service with 66,200 permanent employees, thousands more temporary and semi-Government employees, is top heavy and enjoys privileges, concessions, perks and trips not economically possible in the private sector. With our astronomical debt, it is pointless and outdated for State Service spokespersons to continue saying that Government administration costs compare satisfactorily with other countries. Recent announcements that Government charges will increase are a “sell out” to the powerful C.S.S.U., and make a mockery of the spirit of the summit talks. The Labour or any other New Zealand Government must face it: there is no way of trading out of our present plight without drastically reducing our crippling administrative costs.—Yours, etc., B. L. MILLER. October 6, 1984.
