Iron Age man

Sir,—l am sure that readers were interested to read the article in “The Press” of October 6 on the discovery of an Iron Age man in an English marsh. The man apparently died by strangulation, since the rope was still around his neck, and there were several broken vertebrae. There is a parallel tc this discovery which took place in Denmark. At Tollund, a head of a man was discovered in a peat bog. This man had apparently died by strangling, since the rope was still around his neck. Stories from Viking history state that sacrifices to Odin took place by strangulation, while at the same time the victim was stabbed with a spear, and the body left hanging from a tree, which could account for broken vertebrae. There are similarities between the way the two men died. Could the Iron Age man have been the victim of a Viking sacrifice to Odin?—Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN. October 6,/1984.
