Judge found guilty
NZPA-AP Chicago A former Cook County, Illinois, judge was found guilty yesterday of accepting thousands bf dollars in bribes, becoming the second judge convicted in the “Operation Greylord” investigation of corruption in America’s biggest court system.
A former Circuit Judge, John Devine, was found guilty by a Federal jury that had deliberated about 20 hours over four days. Devine, aged 54, was found guilty of 25 counts of extortion, 21 counts of mail fraud and one count of racketeering. The jury acquitted him of two counts of extortion.
The Government, in a four-week trial, called Devine “a captain of the ship of corruption,” and accused him of extorting bribes in return for favourable rulings. Prosecutors charged that Devine had accepted more than JUS6OOO ($12,000) in bribes while sitting in car theft court and traffic court from 1978 until 1983.
