Friends to foes in golf final
PA Wellington The tournament favourite, Janice Arnold, of Hamilton, will oppose her long-time friend and rival, Debbie Smith, of Motueka, in the 36-hole final of the national women’s match-play golf championship at Paraparaumu Beach today. Favourites prevailed in all except one of the quarter-finals yesterday morning. The upset occurred when a former New Zealand representative, Jan Scandrett (Otago) eliminated a present national
team member, Brenda Ormsby (Te Puke). Arnold easily beat the Tauranga junior, Jan Cooke, in her quarter-final while in clashes between lowerseeded opponents, Smith ousted Kaye Carroll, and the crowd’s favourite, Daisy Seiringer (Lower Hutt), beat .the Canterbury representative, Adrienne Bond, at the seventeenth with a 10m putt. Arnold moved relentlessly towards a tournament treble when she beat Scandrett in an afternoon semi-
final, and Smith set up a meeting of the national team-mates in the final by beating Seiringer, 4 and 3. Smith and Arnold’s victories in the semi-finals were formalities. Smith has beaten Arnold twice before — in the Russell Grace national women’s tournament and at a national junior championship — but even she expects Arnold to win today’s final and to complete a clean sweep of events at this year’s national women’s ’ championship .
