NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easy on improved turnover yesterday with resource issues under pressure in a correction to steady rises last week and on continued strength in the United States dollar. The all ordinaries index fell 2.6 to 742.6, the all industrials marker rose 0.4 to 1066.4 and the all resources index slid 4.7 to 491.7. Brokers said a sell-off began on Monday afternoon and continued in London overnight when foreign investors liquidated positions after an expected fall in the United States dollar did not eventuate. Brokers said the news of an election on December 1 had little if any bearing on trading. ' BHP retreated 5c to 10.25, its new shares 5c to 10.10.
