Simmental steer realises record price
A Simmental steer set a record price of $1620 at the Addington market yesterday, breaking the old mark of $1504 established in October last year. The three to four-year-old Simmental was one of 10 big steers sold by L. J. G. Witte, of Teddington, all of which made $lOOO or more. The second highest price, also for a Simmental, was $1512. The two biggest steers dwarfed all the.other cattle in the yards. In other prime stock sales, prices for hoggets reseat least $2 a heaabut ewe mutton declined. Spring lambs Strong demand from local butchers ensured a steady sale for new season’s prime lambs, in spite of a yarding of 234, more than double last week’s total Good quality, heavy lambs made $27 or better and many good medium types sold between $23 and Values were:— Heavy spring lambs, to $28.20. Outside competition and asmaller yarding than last week led to a rise of at least $2 a head for hoggets. Quality was generally good, although some hoggets were overfat Top hoggets ranged from $27 to $3O, with woolly sheep making to $32. Prime cattle Ten big steers from L. J. G. Witte, Teddington, including one which set a Addington record price of $1620,-were the highlight of an otherwise mediocre prime cattle sale. The drop in this week’s beef export schedule was reflected in prices at Addington and in some cases the reduction was greater than that in the schedule. Cows and medium heifers were hardest to sell. A yarding of 458, the biggest since early August, contributed to the reduced competition from local and trade buyers. Last week 380 cattle were yarded. A Friesian cow from L. W. Craigie, Horarata, made $7lO and a Murray Grey heifer from P. H. Gray, Waiau, sold at $6OO. Prime steers and heifers to 220 kg sold between 225 c and 230 c a kilogram; from 220 kg to 270 kg, 225 c and 230 c and over 270 kg, to 235 c. Dairy cows Two Friesian heifers and calves sold for $555 and $625 in the dairy cow section. Bobby calves Most beef cross bulls made between $76 and $126 in the bobby calf pens and beef cross heifers sold from $6O to $llO. ’ Friesian bulls were $5O to $B2
and Friesian heifers $4B to $76. The yarding was 179. Store sheep Several lines of store ewe hoggets looked good buying. The top drafting of shorn Corriedale ewe hoggets made $19.80, and shorn Borderdales made $21.60. A line of mediumwoolled Romneys sold to $27.80, but three pens of Romneys and Border cross hoggets were passed. Ewes with lambs at foot had a steady sale. Four pens of heavily woolled ewes made $l7 or better and most other woolly ewes sold between $14.60 and $16.40. Shorn ewes were $lO to $13.50. Three small pens of store
spring lambs sold from $l6 to $18.20. Fat pigs The fat pig sale did not have the buoyancy of the last two weeks. The quality of a big yarding of pigs was mixed andincluded few good grading P fleavy pigs had the best of the sale, some selling to $166. A small yarding of choppers sold well and most fetched more than $l4O. Values were:— Light pork, $9O to $lO5. Medium to heavy pork, $lOB to $l2O. Light to medium bacon, $124 to $l4O. Quality was good and values remained fully firm with last week’s market Strong competition was provided by outside buyers. Good weaners regularly sold between $42 and $45 and large stores sold to $B5. Values were:— Small weaners, $32 to $3B. Good weaners, $4O to $47. Slips and small stores, $5O to $63. Large stores, $67 to $BO.
