Newman’s new bus route approved
Newman’s Coachlines, Ltd, might soon run a bus service between Christchurch and Dunedin. The Licensing Authority for the No. 9 Transport District (Mr D. L. Hogan) has given Newman’s Coachlines permission to run the service as long as it changes its proposed timetable. Mr Hogan said that Newman’s proposed that the run would take a minimum of shr 20min whereas tests by the Railways Road Services showed that the service would take at least shr
45min. The proposed times would require an average speed of 76.6km/h which could not be achieved observing the legal speed limits, he said. Mr Hogan was also critical of the 30 minute rest period required to be taken by the driver after 5H hours of driving. “It was proposed that these should be taken during intervals of 30 minutes between the time of arrival and departure. This is obviously not enough to give the driver a clear 30 minutes free of driving and attend-
ing to the vehicle and passengers.
“As I find that these travelling times are too high I cannot hold that the proposed service is safe and reliable.
“I therefore propose to refer the timetable back to the applicant to enable him to meet the legal requirements,” Mr Hogan said.
refer the timetable back to the applicant to enable him to meet the legal requirements,” Mr Hogan said. An application to carry goods on the service was also successful although the class of goods has been restricted to parcels and mails.
