Container record

The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s 1983-84 financial year has been one of record tonnages and its container terminal has been a big contributor to the figures.

The Australian Endeavour was the last container vessel to use the terminal for the year ended September 30, bringing the yearly total to a record 30,923 T.E.U.S.

The terminal handled about 5000 more containers for the year compared with 1982-83, an increase of 19 per cent. The record was attibuted mainly to the advent of the Japanese-Korean container trade which began calling at Lyttelton in January this year, according to the terminal’s manager, Mr Bill Siddall. The trade, which has generated about two ship calls a month, has had a big impact on both the terminal’s tonnage and the over-all port tonnage for the nine months it has been functioning.

The steady growth in the Tasman trade was also mentioned by Mr Siddall as contributor to the increase in container traffic.

“The only disappointing trade figure for the year is for the United Kingdom-Europe trade which is appreciably down on last year,” he said.

. “No doubt an additional percentage of the trade will be carried by the Wool Board’s approved carriers such as the A.B.C. Container Line, which has recently chosen to use Port Chalmers as its South Island port.” Other figures given by Mr Siddall show ship calls up from 91 last year to 117, representing an increase of 28 per cent. Use of berths rose 6 per cent to 42 per cent for the year. ARRIVALS Spirit of Free Enterprise (8 a.m.), 1204, Wellington (Pacifica). Turkmenistan (11.30 a.m.), 2381, sea (Scales).
