Cooking oil cleared
NZPA-Reuter Madrid Doctored cooking oil was not responsible for the deaths of 352 people in Spain during the last two years and the precise cause was still unknown, an official report said yesterday. Issued by a research team commissioned by the World Health Organisation, the report concluded that there was no scientific evidence to blame poisoned oil for the illness which struck more than 20,000 people.
Cooking oil processed for industrial use but then sold for cooking was officially named as the cause of the illness, but the research team said that it had fed laboratory mice daily with the same oil and failed to detect any symptoms. Research was continuing,
and the 10-member team said that it planned to review its findings in December.
