Maui B project likely to proceed
PA New Plymouth The Maui B offshore gas platform will almost certainly go ahead, says the Minister of Energy Mr Tizard.
Appraisal wells may be drilled before the end of this year. It would take seven years to develop the second platform, he said. If Maui B did not go ahead, the New Plymouth power station and Huntly could be in trouble. “The crunch time is five to seven years from now. We have got to know where
we are going,” he said. Feasibility studies for the second platform would begin before the end of the year. Mr Tizard said that overseas companies were interested in investing in oil exploration off New Zealand. The Maui B platform was in the “billion dollar” class and plans for oil exploration and development over the next five years were worth more than ?1 billion.
He hinted that Petrocorp could withdraw from offshore oil exploration.
