Ormsby leads
PA Wellington The New Zealand representative, Brenda Ormsby (Te Puke) shot a one-over par 75 to lead the Mellsop Cup national women’s stroke-play golf championship after the first round at Paraparaumu Beach yesterday. Ormsby teamed on Wednesday with the present national champion, Janice Arnold, to score a record third victory in the New Zealand foursomes championship. Yesterday she treated her partner with disrespect, hitting form to lead Arnold by a stroke at the end of a wind-blown first round.
Ormsby was nothing if not consistent. She went through nine holes in 37, square with the card, then come home in 38. She had two birdies and three oneover pars. Arnold, who jointly holds the Mellsop Cup with the Australian, Corinne Dibnah, fired 38s on both nines yesterday. She was mainly consistent and showed flashes of the form which is expected to give her the title this year for the third time since 1981. Her round had
its low points, however, the worst Being a three-over par at the sixth. The youthful Debbie Smith (Motueka) and Shelley Duncan (Otago), carded 77s to be two strokes off the pace. Leading scores.—
