Our Mana’s luck could change for the better

By

G. K. YULE

Our Mana has had little luck so far on his spring campaign, but this could change in the Lord Module Supporters’ Handicap at Motukarara tomorrow. He has drawn favourably at No. 6 in a capacity field which has justly rewarded the enterprise of the Banks Peninsula Trotting Club in introducing a $lO,OOO race to the meeting.

Our Mana will be having his fifth start on a programme aimed at fitting him for another tilt at the New Zealand Cup on November 6. He has had a second, a fourth, a seventh and a sixth so far and is overdue for a winning turn. Last Saturday he looked to be knocked right out of the race in an incident some 700 m from the end of the main race at Ashburton. That he was capable of recovering so much ground when the pace was at his hottest showed that the son of Schell Hanover was close to his best. Enterprise, regarded by many as being lucky to retain his win at Ashburton last week, is in rare form at present. He went well for second in the Methven Cup a week before his Ashburton win and should be even better this time. He can sprint and stay and should be the one to test Our Mana. Norton, already the winner of two races this spring, has gone well in his other three starts. He has to overcome the disadvantage of starting from the second line, but this should not be insurmountable for a horse of his talents. He started from 10m last Saturday and made ground steadily for fourth at the end of a record-run race. Richard Brosnan’s pair, Supreme Ruler and Double Cove, have both had a win and two placings from their three most recent starts. For Supreme Ruler it will be one of his first attempts on grass, but there is no reason why he should not handle the Motukarara course with confidence. The only chink in his make-up is his inability to muster top speed quickly from a standing start. This could be offset by the long run home and if he races as well as when he finished second at Ashburton, he should again share in the money. Double Cove is most consistent and another big run is expected from him. Along with Mighty Me, he appeals most of the others, but there is plenty of room for an upset in a big field.
