Youth sent to jail
A youth, aged 16, was jailed for nine months when he appeared in the District Court for sentence yesterday on charges of attempted burglary and receiving. A District Court jury had earlier found the defendant guilty of the attempted burglary • of the Maximart Discount Store, at Shirley, on June 6, during which a car was used to batter the shop’s doors. He had pleaded guilty to a further
charge of receiving $6OOO of stolen jewellery. Judge Pain said the jewellery was found in the defendant’s possession the night before his trial was to start and he had admitted trying to sell it.
The Judge said that the defendant had been involved in continued serious criminal activity during the last 18 months and it was clear that sentences imposed had had no deterrent
effect. He said that the defendant showed a criminal maturity beyond his years and he was completely satisfied that a custodial sentence was the only appropriate measure. The defendant was sentenced to nine months imprisonment on each charge to be served concurrently. Miss K. P. McDonald appeared for the Crown, and Mr P. N. Dhyrberg for the defendant.
