Home comforts
Sir,—l am not a very militaryminded person, but I thought servicemen received training in, among other things, survival techniques. Imagine my disbelief on hearing that American airmen were staying at a luxury hotel because they might catch cold in our chilly Wigram barracks. Are not wars still about hardship, deprivation and, dare I mention it, death? What if
there’s not a convenient Hilton just along the road? Will everyone go home in a huff? Perhaps this is another good reason for ditching the A.N.Z.U.S. alliance: our American allies simply are not tough enough. — Yours, etc.,
GRAHAM FRENCH. October 4, 1984.
