Queen’s Pal likely winner at Wingatui tomorrow

By

J. J. BOYLE

Queen’s Pal, a mare of generous size, gives equally generously of her talents in racing, and compels attention as likely winner of the D. P. Wilson Handicap at Wingatui tomorrow.

The Otago-owned, Canter-bury-trained Palatable mare is top weight with 57kg in the first leg of the Otago Racing Club’s T.A.B. double. She carried the same weight in her most recent victory, in the Otago Hunt Club’s Tally Ho Handicap at Wingatui in May, and again when an unlucky second to Super Dude in the Wrightson on the same course in June. Between those two performances she was a close second with 56kg in the Waikato Racing Club’s Noble Heights Stakes, also at 1600 m - a performance that confirmed her stature as one of New Zealand’s more talented metric milers when the tracks are yielding or soft. Queen’s Pal goes into tomorrow’s race after one start this season. She was unable to improve her formidable percentage of placed runs to starts in the Winter Cup at Riccarton on August 11, but she lost little stature with her sixth under 56kg. She was attempting to give weight to the five to finish just ahead of her, four of them runners for North Island/ stables.

There do not appear to be any Bracken Ridges, Bronze Valleys, or Rebel Royales in the line-up against Queen’s Pal tomorrow.

Soaring High, the closest to her in the weights, is probably better over shorter trips. Seafarer has something of a talent at the metric mile, but he is eight and an equally good case might be made for General Beaufort, which is half his age, and has shown promise coming through the grades under the direction of the Washdyke trainer, Pat Corboy. The Otago T.A.B. double will become a real family affair if Queen’s Pal does win, and if her younger brother, Young Nick, meets all the requirements posed by the demands of The Salisbury, another 1600 m event.

Young Nick, like Queen’s Pal, is owned by Mrs Florae Griffin, and races from the Prendergast stable at West Melton.

Like Queen’s Pal, he also will be ridden by Grant Davison, and would not have to improve out of sight on recent fourths at Ashburton and Wingatui to put more bloom on the family record.

Reingard is another promising four-year-old runner for Canterbury, a winner over 1400 m and a fast-finishing second over 1600 m at the Grand National meeting. Best of the home brigade will probably be Vrinsk and Seafarer’s stablemate Decieboy. Vrinsk was the South Island’s only winner at the Wellington winter meeting, and has since showed robust qualities with two seconds, a third, and a fifth in his four starts this season.

Decieboy was placed in the Dunedin Guineas a year ago and it was surprising that he managed to win only once later in the season. However, his two runs as a four-year-old for a second and a third offer hope for an early extension to his winning record from the Jim Pankhurst stable.
