Soil science conference field trips

Field trips to the Waiau Plains irrigation scheme in North Canterbury and to the Waimakariri River catchment will form part of the 1984 conference of the New Zealand Society of Soil Science. The conference will be held from November 26 to 30 and be based at Lincoln College. The Waiau Plains trip will provide an opportunity to study the soil resources in relation to irrigation design and implementation and the consequent changes in land use on the plains. The second trip will look at the soil resources in the Waimakariri catchment and alternative land uses. The N. H. Taylor Memorial Lecture will be given by Dr G. Will, of the Forest Research Institute at Rotorua who will talk about soil fertility and forest plantations. Dr R. J. Coventry, of the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Townsville, will present the J. K. Taylor Medallist invited paper. His subject will be the pedology of the red, yellow and grey earth soils of North Queensland.
