Minister supports campaign
Parliamentary reporter The Plain English Campaign has the support of the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Mrs Shields. She said yesterday that it had great potential to help consumers and that it was important that they not be left behind by the jargon of the new technology or of the legal profession. Mrs Shields said that many of the complaints handled by the Consumers’ Institute stemmed from misunderstanding regarding a product or contract because of language complexities.
Mr Shields recently met the head of the Plain English Campaign, Ms Diane Nicholson, and said she foresaw a close working relationship between her Ministry and the group.
