Top seeds through
PA Auckland A semi-final clash between the defending men’s badminton singles champion, Graeme Robson (Auckland), and Jacob van Seim (Waitemata) is expected to be a feature of the national championships tonight. Robson, the second seed, advanced to the semi-finals with a 15-4 15-0 win over the eighth seed, Kevin Ross (Wanganui). The fifth-seeded van Seim upset the fourth seed, Kerrin Harrison (North Shore), 11-15 15-9, 15-7. In the other semi-final, the top seed and North Island champion, Phil Horne (North Shore) will meet Glenn Stewart (Auckland). Toni Whittaker (Auckland),
the top seed, took another step towards her first national women’s singles title by winning, 11-8, 11-8 against the unseeded former national representative, Katrin Lockey (North Shore). Whittaker will meet the third seed, Karen Phillips (Counties) in one semi-final, while the second seed, Linda Persson (North Shore) will play Margaret Lee (Hutt valley) in the other. Alison Ross was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the women’s singles by Miss Persson. She lost, 11-8, 11-7. Canterbury’s top women’s doubles pairing, Jane Clarke and Miss Ross, advanced to the quarter-finals with a 15-4, 15-4 win over C. Billington and K. Carrington, of Auckland.
