Invercargill wool cheaper

Wool prices eased slightly at an Invercargill sale by separation in Christchurch yesterday. The official report of the sale said that crossbred fleece prices were in sellers’ favour compared with the Timaru sale on August 23. Crossbred second-shear prices were generally unchanged, skirtings (bellies) 6 per cent cheaper, crutchings about 5 per cent cheaper, and oddments 7.5 per cent cheaper. The offering was 21,122 bales, including 659 bales from Wool Board stocks, said the official report. The offering consisted of 49 per cent crutchings, 22 per cent fleece wool, 7 per cent second-shear, 16 per cent oddments, and the balance hogget and lambs’ wool.

“The crutchings, in the main, were of average colour and showed some degrees of mud contamination,” said the report. “Some lines which showed stain were discounted. “Good-coloured crutchings were in short supply and commanded a definite premium,” said the report. “Pre-lamb shorn fleece .was/ well presented, but sonx? lines showed a slight

discoloration because of the wet summer and autumn. The length of fleece wools was exceptional,” it said. Competition was well spread with the Continent, New Zealand mills, and the Far East the principal buyers. The Wool Board gave minimal support to the market by bidding on 328 bales, 1.6 per cent of the offering, and having 15 bales sold or passed to it. Prompt date for the sale is Monday, September 17. The adjusted weighted average sale price was 356.24 c a kilogram, according to the Wool Board. The market indicator was 356 c. It applies to all wool sold at the sale and all wool sold privately from midnight on August 29 to midnight on September 5.
