Biggest hydro-dam

NZPA-AFP Washington The United States will help China build the biggest 'hydro-electric dam in the world, under the terms of an accord just signed, the U.S Interior Department has announced. Government experts and representatives of private American companies will go to China next month to study the project. The dam, called Three Gorges, will be built across the Yangtse River. It will be able to generate 13 million kilowatts of electricity, compared to a projected output of 12 x 6 million for Itaipu dam, being built between Brazil and Paraguay. Plans for the dam existed in 1940, but were abandoned in 1947 after the Communists took power in China, the Interior Department said.
