Aquino’s killer known —lawyer
NZPA-AP Manila A lawyer, Francisco Villa, said yesterday that the board investigating the assassination of Benigno Aquino had gathered enough evidence to form a clear picture of what had happened and who killed the Filipino opposition leader. Mr Villa said the board, in its findings expected to be released next month, would also answer the question of why the chief rival of President Ferdinand Marcos was killed.
Mr Villa, a member of the legal panel assisting the investigative body, declined to elaborate, saying it was up to the board to announce its findings to the public. He refused any Meet comment on a reporrjublished by the California
newspaper “San Jose Mercury News” asserting that the board planned to recommend trial for the chief of the armed forces, General Fabian Ver, and six other military people in connection with the August 21, 1983, assassination. The newspaper said its information came from one of the five board members.
Mr Aquino was shot while in military custody as he left a China Airlines plane that had brought him home from exile in the United States. The military said he was killed by an alleged Communist agent, Rolando Galman, who was gunned down by soldiers seconds after Aquino was killed. The Aquino family says he was shot by a soldier and has accused Mr Marcos of involvement.
