Cricket date approved
The first week-end in October was recommended as opening day (or days) for cricket clubs at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association last evening. It was also recommended that the first competition day be October 13 and that only the top three grades play at Labour week-end. The chairman of the association, Alby Duckmanton, made reference to the fact that only one selector had been nominated for this season’s under-19 Canterbury team. “This is the most enjoyable age group and it involves only a short period. Why there is only one nomination has got me whacked, especially with so many past and present cricketers around,” said Mr Duckmanton. Mr Duckmanton also paid a compliment to the work done by the Hagley Park grounds
committee and, especially by the groundsman, Ross McLachlan, on the good condition of the pitches at Hagley. Officers elected were:— President, Mr D. J. Elder; vice-presidents, Messrs G. W. Frampton and D. C. Wilson, assistant-secretary, Mr A. Graves; treasurer, Mr D. L. Gallop; auditor, Mr W. J. Bell, management committee, Messrs R. B. Parlane, A. A. Dobson, G. Gambles. A. G. Duckmanton, C. Anderson, C. H. Thiele, B. C. Adams, J. Ackland, D. Weaver, B. A. McCrorie and Mrs P. F. Carrick.
The president of the association, Mr D. J. Elder, successfully moved that it be recorded in the minutes the association’s appreciation of the long and valuable service of the retiring sports editor of “The Press,” Mr R. T. Brittenden.
