Burglary, assault charges
Detectives have arrested a man in connection with the sexual assault and severe beating of a woman in her flat in Sydenham earlier this month. The man, aged 32, also of Sydenham, would appear in the District Court today charged with burglary and assault with intent to commit rape, said a spokesman for the Christchurch south C. 1.8. The man was interviewed on Monday and arrested yesterday. The woman, aged 20, was attacked when she was alone in her flat, in Hastings Street, on the evening of August 1. An intruder dragged her along the hallway and punched her about the face and head. He indecently assaulted her and also held a knife at her back.
Policemen investigating the attack described it as particularly severe.
