Bank officers take case to department

PA Wellington The Bank Officers’ Union has put its case against a refusal by trading banks to discuss extended opening hours to the Trade and Industry Department. The union said yesterday that it had asked the department to investigate its complaint and to press the banks to comply “with their obligaton.” .“The union believes that the position adopted by the overseas-owned banks is in breach of guidelines for multi-national enterprises adopted by member Governments of the O.E.C.D.

“The industrial relations guidelines urge multinationals to engage in constructive negotiation with employee organisations with a view to reaching agreement on employment conditions. There are also provisions for the providing of necessary information to employee representatives,” the union said.

Apart from a refusal to negotiate, the banks had refused information which would support claims by them that market share was linked to opening hours, and also what further extensions of opening hours they might be contemplating, he said.
