Taxis’ tariff increase allowed
The Taxi Proprietors’ Federation has been successful in its claim for an increase in single and dual tariff fares. To cover the recent petrol price rise the Secretary for Transport has allowed a 3.2 per cent increase in tariff charges. Unlike previous tariff increases this will not be a lump sum charge at the end of a journey, but an increase per metre. Once every 155 m travelled meant a 10c charge; now the 10c charge is for every 150 m. A Ministry of Transport spokesman said that this was because “people do not like getting into a taxi and finding they already owe $1 or whatever.” For night charges the distance travelled for 10c has decreased from 124 m to 120 m. Taxis have to have their tariff indicators recalibrated at Ministry of Transport testing stations to adjust to the new charges.
