Oliver Reed goes on drunken spree
NZPA-ReuterSt Peter Port, Guernsey The British actor, Oliver Reed, went on a drunken spree on the holiday island of Guernsey, in the Channel Islands. He was covered in blood and staggering in circles while wearing only his underpants in mid-after-noon, a court heard. Reed, aged 46, pleaded guilty at Guernsey Magistrate’s Court to two charges of acting in a disorderly manner and punching out a hotel window.
His defence lawyer, Mr Michael Eades, said that Reed, a veteran of Holly-
wood and British movies, blamed his behaviour on drinking rum. He spent 43
hours in custody after the incidents last Sunday.
The Court was told that the actor, best remembered for his roles in “Oliver” and “Women in Love,” tried to break into the hotel shouting: “I want the general.” His girlfriend, Josephine Burge, tried to restrain him but he kept falling down in the street and police finally arrested him.
Reed, who was on holiday in Guernsey before starting to film ’ a version of “Christopher Columbus,” was fined about $260. His lawyer said that the actor’s holiday had been ruined.
