Primary rolls down

PA Wellington There were 10,084 fewer primary school pupils in New Zealand last year than in 1982, the sharpest decline since 1980.

The Education Department’s annual report said that the total primary roll on July 1, 1983, was 476,083 which was 49,240 down on the all-time peak roll of July 1, 1975.

Last year’s secondary school rolls were up 7247 on 1982 figures. The total of 230,748 was only 4295 pupils below the 1978 peak of 235,043.'

The report said that this increase could be attributed to two main factors — the higher retention of pupils who would previously have left to find jobs, and the 1983 intake of Form 3 pupils which was larger than in recent years.
